Roben's Yo Yo Basics

Latest update to this document: 21 February 2003

When we hear the term "yo yo", we often have a silly concept of this toy we know of connected to a string. What we forget is that this toy has been around for thousands of years dating back to the Egyptians. They knew what was up. Sure, it's a dorky hobby, but no worse than writing web pages and who says it's so bad to be a dork anyway.

In this basic tutorial, I'm going to give you the basics of how to get started along with some resources for continuing your adventure down the dorky yo yo path. So, get ready to join the thousands that have found a love in the art of spinning a yo yo.

Because there is so much that could be taught (believe it or not), I'll only go over the very basics starting with a section called "Getting Started". This section will give an idea of what kind of yo yo's are out there, what their differences are, how long to make the string, where to place it on your finger, and a few more other beginning steps. From there, there will be a section on the most basic and essential trick of all; the sleeper. After these couple of basics are covered, we'll move forward to learn a few other beginning tricks to get you started. Finally, so that you can find more beyond what I have to offer (becuase there is a ton out there), I'll include a section called "More Yo Yo Stuff".

I wish you good luck on your quest and hope this offers you some insight into the very misunderstood world of Yo Yo.
