Evaporation

Evaporation

Latest update to this document: 12 February 2003

Evaporation is the period of change in the water cycle where the water actually changes into a gas. Evaporation occurs when the Earth's surface is heated by the sun, causing the surface water to rise.

Approximately 80% of all evaporation is from the oceans, with 20% coming from inland water.

Winds transport evaporated water around the globe; this determines the humidity of the air.
