Missing Addend Concept

Latest update to this document: 16 April 2003

Suppose I have 12 letters to mail and I only have 5 stamps.
How many more stamps do I need in order to mail all 12 of my letters.

I can find out how many more stamps I need by using the missing addend concept.

If I start with 5 what number can I add to it that will give me a sum of 12?

5 + ? = 12

I can find this number by counting up from 5 to 12.
I will count up from 5 until I reach the number 12.

5......6......7......8......9......10......11......12

I have counted up 7 numbers.

5 + 7 = 12

Since I have 5 stamps I need 7 more stamps to mail all 12 of my letters.
