Assignments are due one week from the date assigned unless specified otherwise
All e-mail communications to the instructor regarding assignments are to be sent
to L@Ellerbruch.nmu.edu unless specified otherwise.
Quality
Students are expected to produce quality products. If a student meets
the stated requirements for an assignment, but does it in a minimal fashion, the
maximum grade for the product will be a "C". To earn a "B" or an "A" there must be
reasonable quality in the work.

After you are a member of the group you can send a message to all in the
group easily. You must send the message from the same address you subscribed from.
To send a message to everyone in the mail group you would use the address:

Make a personal link page. Put it your special personal password protected folder
on the Instructor's server Ellerbruch.nmu.edu as shown in class. Send an e-mail meesage
confirming that you are ready to have your link page linked to the roster.
The link page will be your connection between the class roster and your assignments.
You will put your assignments in your folder and provide links on your link page. The
link page must NOT BE a fancy and complex page. It should take minimal time to load.
It will have NO graphics. The link page must have four parts.
Part 1. Includes a title for the page and a header on the page.
Part 2. Has links to assignments as they are completed with descriptions of the assignments.
Part 3. Has links to any favorite or useful pages.
Part 4. Has links to return to significant pages (as a minimum you need to
be able to return to the CS255 home page.) and identification information. Be
sure to have your name and e-mail address at the bottom as creator of the
page.
This must NOT be an elaborate personal home page.
The path to your folder will be:

Send a self-introduction message to CompEd.
Send a message to the CompEd mail group introducing yourself. Use good
writing form with complete sentences and paragraphs. Give any appropriate
information you would be willing to share with the entire group. Do include a
bit of background information regarding who you are, where you are from, your
academic areas of study, personal goals, and interests.
The subject should be CS255 E4 introduction
E5 - 50 points report due by Monday 2/24/03
Subscribe to mail groups and send a report as described in an e-mail to CompEd.
E6 - 50 points report due by Monday 3/17/03
Download an e-book (electronic book) from Project Gutenberg, http://gutenberg.net/ or some other source of e-books.
Read from it for at least one-half hour. Write a report and send it to CompEd. If you use a source other
than Gutenberg, give the URL of the source.
The report should include the title of the book, your name and a brief description of the book.
The majority of the report should be on the experience of reading an e-book, and your feelings
about the possible use of these books in teaching. The total length of the report should be between one-half
and one typewritten page.
The subject line should have "CS255 E6 " and your last name in it.
Self-Evaluation - 100 points due 4/24/03
Submit a self-evaluation as described in class.
P1 - Personal Home Page - 20pts due Thursday 1/23/03
Start a personal home page (it can be "fancy"). Do Not use large graphics.
Limit graphics so the total size of the folder is less than 200K.
Install the page in your personal folder on the Ellerbruch server and link
it to your link page. It should be in a folder named P1.
P2 - Teacher Resources - 50pts due Friday 2/7/03
Create a set of educational resource links for teachers. Have at least ten links organized by category.
The links must have descriptions/annotations. Two of the links must be mathematics resources.
The ten sources must be from different places. That is, the beginning part of the URL
must be different, i.e. different domain names.
Put the links and descriptions on a web page with appropriate title, headers etc.
The page and any related material should be in a folder named P2
and linked to your link page.
P3 - Student Resources - 50pts due Friday 2/14/03
Create a set of links for a specific group of students. Identify the age/grade level
of the students for whom you are building this set of links. Have at least ten links.
The links must have descriptions/annotations.
The links must include material for students in mathematics, science,
and language arts/reading (2 links minimum for each area.) You can include additional areas.
Group the links by subject area on the web page. Do not use drill activities for
all ten resources, max 2 drill and practice.
Each link with take a student to web page(s) the student will be expected to use in some way.
Your annotations should tell the student what he/she will be doing at that location.
The ten sources must be from different places. That is, the beginning part of the URL
must be different, i.e. different domain names.
Put the links and descriptions on a web page with appropriate title, headers etc.
Group like areas together on the page.
The page and any related material should be in a folder named P3
and linked to your link page.
P4 - Teach Facts - 50pts due Wednesday 2/19/03
Design a web page or pages in html to teach a set of facts on a topic. Make it clear at the beginning
what you are going to teach and then do it. Specify the age/grade for which the "lesson" is appropriate.
Include "all" the appropriate fact for the topic you pick. You must do more than display "facts" on a page.
You are not to go beyond teaching facts at this time.
The page(s) and any related material should be in a folder named P4,
linked to your link page and described on the link page.
P5 - Teach Something Algorithmic - 50pts due Friday 2/21/03
Design a web page or pages in html to teach an algorithm to do something. Make it clear at the beginning
what you are going to teach and then do it. Specify the age/grade for which the "lesson" is appropriate.
The page(s) and any related material should be in a folder named P5,
linked to your link page and described on the link page.
P6 - Tutorial for Understanding - 50pts due Friday 2/28/03
Make a tutorial using html for use over the web. You must teach more than facts, low level knowledge or algorithmic material.
Your lesson must get at understanding, application or higher for some concept. Make it clear at the beginning
what you are going to teach and then do it. Specify the age/grade for which the "lesson" is appropriate.
Put the tutorial page(s) and any related material in a folder named P6,
link it to your link page and describe it on the link page.
Use the criteria and design techniques given in class.
P7 - 50pts due Wednesday 3/12/03
Make a page or set of pages of annotated links to games.
There must be at least five "educational games" annotated.
The annotations must explain how these games are educational
as well as any information which will help in their use in a classroom. Information should be
provided on how to start and/or play the game.
At most, two of the games can be "drill" games. No downloads allowed, no logins
allowed, minimal commercials allowed. If your
link is to a site with many games, make sure you identify and annotate individual games.
No more than two games should be from the same server.
Link to this main page from your link page. The entire project
should be in a folder labeled P7 and
installed in your personal folder on the Ellerbruch server.
P8 - E-Book Resources - 50pts due Wednesday 3/19/03
Make a web page for e-book resources.
Provide a brief introduction to e-books and their possible use in education. Then
have a set of links for e-book resources. Have at least ten links.
The links must have descriptions/annotations.
The ten sources must be from different places. That is, the beginning part of the URL
must be different, i.e. different domain names.
The web page and any related material should be in a folder named P8
and linked to your link page.
P9 - 50 pts due Wednesday 3/26/03
Create a folder, P9, which will contain a web page describing a java applet game or
simulation and its educational value and use. NOTE!!! Not a Drill called a game!
This web page should be linked through your link page.
There must be at least one link from this page to a web page to run a java applet.
The java web page does not have to have anything fancy on it, just the instructions to run the
applet from the files in your folder.
The necessary files for the applet must be in the P9 folder.
You may have more than the minimum in your P9 folder if the additional material is appropriate to
the game/simulation project.
You may acquire a java applet game or simulation from any site on the world wide web which gives
you access to the code for the game.
It is appropriate to give credit to the creators and sources of the material.
The entire P9 folder is to be installed in your folder on the instructor's computer, be properly
linked and run correctly. It may be appropriate to check the operation from someone else's computer.
The web page does not have to have anything fancy on it, but should have the normal headers and return links.
P10 - 50 pts due Wednesday 4/2/03
Create a set of pdf documents for a specific lesson. At least one should provide information/instruction,
at least one should be a worksheet, and at least one should be a sample quiz or test. These documents
should look attractive and be well designed with nice formatting as well as have accurate content. Don't forget to
include answers to any questions or exercises. The
documents MUST be in pdf format. They should be available through links on a web page
which identifies the subject and grade level, gives some orientation to the lesson, and describes the
documents and links to them. This web page should be linked through your link page. All
parts, web page and various documents should be in a folder named P10 and saved in your folder on the
instructor's server.
P11 - 50pts due Wednesday 4/9/03
Make a page of annotated links (at least 8 different sources) for a unit of study. The links
are to pages students will use as part of the unit, not resources for the teacher to create the
unit. DO NOT CREATE THE ACTUAL UNIT, only the links. Do include a short description of the
unit and the age/grade it is designed for.
Have a link to a page
critiquing some of the sources. You are to identify the three most
effective resources and the three least effective resources. You should
give some explanation for each regarding why you made the decision as you did.
All of the related pages you create should
be in a folder P11 and installed in your personal folder on the Ellerbruch server.
The main page should have a link on your link page.
P12 - 50 pts due Wednesday 4/16/03
Create a set of documents for a specific lesson to teach a concept where the primary document is a
power point slide show.
The main page must have descriptive material for the lesson and links to all necessary resources. Most of the
resources should be available as various documents in the P12 folder. The main document will be a Power Point
slide show for the lesson with instruction and links to resources and further instruction. Some links should
be to pages in your P12 folder and others should be to pages on other servers.
The main web page should be linked through your link page. All
parts; web page, Power Point slide show, and any other documents should be in a folder named P12
and saved in your folder on the instructor's server.
P13 - 100 pts due Wednesday 4/23/03
Put it all together. FINAL PROJECT!
Create a folder, P13, which will contain a fantastic mathematics activity/lesson to teach
a mathematics concept. DRILL IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH. FACTS WON'T BE GOOD ENOUGH. DO NOT plagiarize.
You should put all the parts of the semester's content together to build a fantastic lesson. You do
not have to include everything we have done, but you should use multiple parts to create
a noteworthy and high quality lesson worth 100 points.
This assignment is to be linked through your link page.
Also included in the folder and accessed from the activity page should be
any materials, handouts, etc. which are used for the activity/lesson.
