MAKING A SNOWMAN PINATA

1. Begin with the larger of the two balloons.

2. Drag a long strip of paper through the papier-mâché paste.

3. Wipe away excess paste with finger.

4. Place the soaked strip on the balloon at an angle.

5. Repeat, placing the next strip so that it slightly overlaps the first one.

6. Continue with this process until the balloon is entirely covered except for a 3-inch section at its top.

7. Apply a second layer of papier-mâché strips at an angle opposite the one previously used.

8. Apply a few more layers of papier-mâché strips at opposing angles, allowing the layers to dry between applications.

9. When the layers have completely dried, puncture the balloon and pull it out of the papier-mâché frame.

10. For the head of the snowman, apply paper strips to the smaller balloon in the same manner described for the base of the snowman, leaving an open space at the top of about 1 1/2 inches.

11. When the layers have completely dried, puncture and remove the balloon.

Putting the Piñata Together and Decorating

Steps:

12. Place wrapped candy in the base of the snowman.

13. Cover the opening of the smaller balloon with short strips of wet paper.

14. Place the head on the base with the short strips of paper facing down.

15. Tape the two pieces together using masking tape. 17. When the papier-mâché has completely dried, paint the snowman form white.

18. Draw on eyes, nose, mouth and buttons with markers or paint.

19. Securely attach a loop of thin wire to the top of the snowman to serve as a hanging hook.

Overall Tips:

Use a total of five or six layers of papier-mâché for the piñata.

Use more than six layers to make the piñata more difficult to break.
