PLAYING WITH A PINATA

Steps:

1. Attach a rope to the top of the piņata.

2. Choose a location with plenty of open space to suspend the piņata. Hanging the piņata outdoors near a tree with a low branch is most common. An empty garage or basement are also good places.

3. Pass the free end of the rope over the tree branch, ceiling rafter or hook, making sure that the rope won't get caught on anything and can be pulled easily.

4. Designate a person to "grip" the rope and suspend the piņata. The rope grip should be a teenager or adult.

5. Make sure all the participants stand at a safe distance in a circle around the piņata area.

6. Tie a blindfold on the first contestant, or "batter."

7. Spin the batter around several times in order to make him or her dizzy, thereby making the piņata more difficult to hit.

8. Give the batter a baseball bat or wooden stick and point him or her in the direction of the piņata.

9. Instruct the batter to swing at the piņata, making sure that the other kids are not in danger of being hit. The rope grip moves the piņata up and down trying to keep the batter from striking the piņata. Batters should each have 5 to 10 swings.

10. Have the batters take turns until one of them breaks open the piņata, causing the treats and prizes to fall to the ground.

Tips:

If there is no hook on the piņata, make your own by threading a strong string through the top of the piņata. If there are children of various ages participating, start with the youngest children to increase the chances that everyone gets to participate.
