How To Play Dots And Boxes:
To begin playing the Dots and Boxes game you simply click when the red line, which is you, is in the right spot where you would like to make a line. Then you will see another white line appear. This is your opponent, which is the computer. You and the computer will take turns making lines. When you have all four lines between the dots filled in, you will see a square formed. If it is colored dark green it is the computer's sqaure. If it is light green then it is your square. Whoever has the most squares colored in when all the lines are filled is the winner!
Educational Value:
The game Dots And Boxes is educational because it is a high strategy game. The individuals who play it will really have to use their brain when deciding where to put a line. If you put one line in a wrong or bad spot, your opponent could easily get ahead in the game. It seems like a simple game, but try it out and see for yourself. Its a lot more complicated in the end then when you first begin. Another educational aspect of this game is the fact that the player will learn that it takes four lines to make a square. This game is a great tool to help students learn this important fact and remember it.
Appropriate Age/Grades:
Dots And Boxes is appropriate for any child who can use a mouse. It all depends on the skills of the individual child. I think that first grade, about age six or seven would be able to play this game and understand it.
