Summary
We have learned that there are many different plants and animals that live in the Great Lakes.
Here are a few facts that we have covered.
- Most of The Great Lakes surround the state of Michigan. The lakes contain freshwater. Freshwater makes up about 2.5% of the Earth's water.
- There are 5 Great Lakes. Lake Huron, Lake Ontario, Lake Michigan, Lake Erie, and Lake Superior. We can use an acronym to remember the lakes names. The acronym is HOMES.
- There are animals that live in and around the Great Lakes. These animals are meant to live with freshwater. Some of the animals are Salmon, Trout, Great Blue Heron,Ducks, Bullfrog, Turtles, Mussels, and mammals like moose and mink. there are also many endangered species in the area. Endangered Species are animals that may not still be alive in a few years.
- There are also animals that live in the Great Lakes that didn't always live there. These animals are unwanted. The Zebra Mussel block pipes for water. The Sea Lamprey attaches to fish causing them to die. There are also other animals that are really tiny that don't belong in the Great Lakes.
- Plants also live in the Great Lakes area. There are four basic types of plants. Floating plants that have roots below the water and leaves on the surface, submergent plants that grow completely underwater, emergent plants that have roots that grow underwater and leaves and flowers that are completely above water, and wet area plants and shrubs that grow on the shoreline that are completely above the water but can get wet.
