Plants
We learned that there are plants that live in saltwater. There are also plants that live in freshwater too. If you were to put these plants in saltwater they would die.
There are four basic types of plants found in the Great Lakes region.
- Floating Plants
Yellow Pond Lily
- These plants have roots underwater but there leaves are on the surface of the water. Some examples are the Yellow Pond Lily and duckweeds.
- Submergent Plants
Coontail
- These plants grow completely underwater. Some examples are Wild Celery and Coontail.
- Emergent Plants
Cattails
- These plants roots are mostly underwater and the leaves and flowers grow above the water. Common examples are Cattails and Bulrush.
- Wet area and shrub plants
Meadowsweet
- These plants grow above the water level. These plants also need to be able to get wet. If the water level rises then the plants roots might be underwater. Some examples of these plants are shrubs and grasses such as the Meadowsweet and the Spotted Touch-me-not.
These are the plants that can be found in the Great Lakes. Let's summarize what we learned.
