Creatures of The Great Lakes

In all of the Great Lakes we have similar animals. Many of the animals that are in one lake are also in the others. Not all animals that are present in the lakes are wanted. Here we will talk about the animals that are wanted.

Animals

Fish - There are many different kinds of fish in the Great Lakes. Some of the major kinds of fish are Salmon,Trout, Yellow Perch, Lake Whitefish, Walleye, and Muskellunge.

Salmon, Walleye
Birds - Some birds migrate. When a bird migrates it means that it will move to different parts of the world at different times of the year. In Michigan, when the weather starts to get colder you can see flocks of birds flying south for the winter. Some of the birds that we have around the Great Lakes are ducks, robins, warbler, sparrow, bittern, the Great Blue Heron and many others.

Amphibians- An Amphibian is born in the water but later is able to live on the land. As the amphibian gets older it starts to breath in the air instead of underwater. Amphibians that we have in the Great Lakes are frogs such as the Bullfrog, and salamanders.

Reptiles- Reptiles are cold blooded animals that are covered in scales and breath with their lungs. The Great Lakes area contains reptiles such as the turtles and snakes.

Invertebrate- Invertebrate are animals that don't have a backbone. Examples of invertebrates in the Great Lakes are crayfish and mussels.

Mammals- Mammals are animals that use there lungs to breath and have a backbone. Mammals don't live in the actual waters of the Great Lakes but they do live in the area surrounding the Lakes. Animals such as deer, beaver, mink, badger, and moose live in the Great Lakes area.

Endangered Species-Animals that are in the Great Lakes area that don't have many survivors. Some of the endangered birds of the area are the Bald eagle and Piping plover . There are also other endangered species such as the Lake Erie water snake, Houghton's goldenrod, Lakeside daisies, White cat's paw pearly mussel, and a few butterflies. There are also mammals that are endangered in the area.
