This is a language arts lesson designed for students in the third or fourth grade.

Do you know what a synonym or an antonym is? Synonyms and antonyms are very important in our writing and our speech. Many of us use synonyms or antonyms without realizing it.

How many times have you said that you were freezing? You are saying that you are cold. Freezing is a synonym of cold. Synonyms are words that have a similar meaning. Other examples could be nice and kind, smile and grin, or went and gone.

Antonyms are just the opposite of synonyms. Antonyms are words that have opposite meanings. An example of an antonym would be hot and cold. Some other examples could be nice and mean, big and small, or bright and dark.

By knowing the synonyms and antonyms of words we can improve the way we write and talk. We can write and speak more creativly when we know more words. We can also prevent the person that is reading our work from becoming bored by not using the same words over and over .
