Clock Game Page
Latest update to this document: 2 December 2002
This page has different educational games on it pertaining to reading a clock. It is broken up into four different categories: Hour Games, Minute Games, Digital-related Games, and Other Clock Games. These games are geared toward second graders who are learning how to tell time on a clock with hands. Some games are more drill-and-practice type, while others are education in disguise.
Hour Games
This game helps children learn and practice telling time on the hour. It is simple to learn how to play because the only thing the student has to do is place the cursor over the correct clock that tells the specified time. There are cartoons that congratulate the student if they get the answer correct. There are fun animations and sounds along with this game that will keep students' attention.
Snapdragon helps students put words with the time on a clock. It features a red dragon, and it practices time on the hour. The dragon presents a time with words, such as "six o'clock", and the student must move the hands on a clock by pressing arrows. As soon as the wanted time is reached, the clock's alarm goes off. There are sounds and animations with this game that makes it fun to play.
Minute Games
Willy the Watchdog plays this game practicing 30 minute incriments. There is an actual game board on the screen with different times on it. This is a two player game, but if one student wants to play alone, he/she can play both players. The players roll the die, and their color moves so many spaces. It lands on a time, such as 2:30. Then the student must make the clock with hands on the board read 2:30. If a player gives the wrong time for the particular time shown, then that player loses a turn. Whomever gets around the board first wins the game.
Time Clock exercises the five minute intervals on a clock with the student. This is the same game as the java applet game listed below only it cannot be played unless the player is hooked up to the internet. There are times given, and the student has to move the hands of the clock to their correct position so that the time asked is shown on the clock. There are ten different times the student must master, and once he/she has gotten all ten correct, the student has won the game. This game can be played over and over again because the times do not repeat themselves very often.
Time Clock is a Java Boutique applet game that can be downloaded onto your computer for use off the internet. It is the exact same thing as the game called "Time Clock" listed above.
Digital-related Games
Stop the Clock has the students match digital times with clocks with hands. The student must beat the clock to achieve a best time to make the game more fun and challenging. The student must drag the times to the clocks and press "Stop the Clock" button to stop the timer. If the student gets any of the times wrong, they must try again until all the times match.
This game is the classic version of Concentration, only it has the student match up digital clock times with the words a clock would read. This game is fun and educational at the same time because it practices telling time by identifying words with times, and it also provides a search-and-find type of atmosphere to make it more like a game rather than a drill-and-practice.
Other Clock Games
Cat Clock has the students identify the time on a clock with the words you would say. The clock face is a cat, which would appeal to elementary students learning how to tell time. The student must press "Stop" to stop the hands of the clock from moving. Then the student must pick out two ways out of four given of how to say what time is presented on the clock. There is a digital clock that goes along with the face clock to help the student if he/she gets stuck on a problem. This clock only stops on five minute intervals, so it would be good for intermediate clock readers rather than beginning or advanced students.
This game's host is Kat. This game has the student pick a place on the clock for the minute hand, and then the student must figure out what time it is. Once they click on "What time is it?" then they will get the answer. This game is good for having the students say the times of the clock out loud so that they get the feel of what the time sounds like along with what it looks like on a clock and what the words said are.
This clock has revolving hands that stop on a time and the student must identify what time it is. The student can pick the intensity of the game by making the clock speed faster or slower. The clock hands then rotate around the clock and the player must hit "Stop the Clock" when the time in question is made on the clock. The student gets points for how close or if they hit the time right on the nose.
