Unit Resources on Snowflakes
This unit is orientated towards students in the second grade. It is also meant
to help students understand how snowflakes are made, what they look like and
the many different aspects of winter such as freezing and melting. This unit is
basically meant to introduce the different characteristics of snow.

Math Activities with Snow:

It combines the winter season with math and a little bit of art. For this lesson,
a student must draw all types of winter clothing. For example, mittens, scarves,
earmuffs and socks can all be used. Then these items are used to help with the
counting by one's, two's and three's and the like. This is a great idea on how to
help students cement these math skills.

Here is another idea that mixes math and snow. At this
students go outside in groups to build and name snowmen. Then they will help each
other measure the height, diameter and circumference of the snowmen. They will need to
record all this data so they can compare the size of their snowmen with the others.
This lesson can also be extended through the winter term by the students measuring
the snowmen weekly and comparing the changes.

incorporate Language arts with snowflakes. This poem can be acted out by the students
or the meaning can be dissected and discussed within the classroom.
