The following is an example of user named "John Smith" subscribing to the CompEd list on the mailbot.

In the "TO" field of a mail message put:

You can leave the subject line blank for subscribing to this group.

In the first line of the body of the message put:

subscribe CompEd Your Name Note - John Smith would write:

After you are a member of the group you can send a message to all in the group easily.

To send a message to everyone in the mail group you would use the address:

Don't forget a reasonable subject when sending a message to the group.

Send a self-introduction message to CompEd.

Send a message to the CompEd mail group introducing yourself. Use good

writing form with complete sentences and paragraphs. Give any appropriate

information you would be willing to share with the entire group. Do include a

bit of background information regarding who you are, where you are from, your

academic areas of study, personal goals, and interests.

Submit a biography of a mathematician as described in an e-mail message to the CompEd mail group and demonstrated in class.

Assignment E6 20pts due Monday 9/18/00

Make a personal link page. Save it on your computer and be ready to put it in the special personal folder on the Instructors server http://Ellerbruch.nmu.edu as shown in class and notify your instructor by e-mail when it's ready to link.

The link page will be your connection between the class roster and your assignments. You will put your assignments in your folder and provide links on your link page. The link page must have three parts.

Part 1. Include a title for the page, a header on the page, any favorite links you wish to have,

Part 2. Links to assignments as they are completed with descriptions of the assignments.

Part 3. Links to return to significant pages (as a minimum you need to be able to return to the CS255 home page.) and identification information. Be sure to have your name and e-mail address at the bottom as creator of the page.

This must NOT be an elaborate personal home page.

Assignment P1 20pts due Wednesday 9/20/00

Make a "fancy" home page. Save it on your computer for now. Be ready to install it in your personal folder on the Ellerbruch server and link it to your link page. It should be in a folder named P1.

Assignment P2 50pts due Monday 10/2/00

Make a tutorial. Install it in your personal folder on the Ellerbruch server and link it to your link page. It should be in a folder named P2. Use the criteria given in class.

Assignment E7 50pts due Monday 10/9/00

Create a set of educational resource links on your link page. Have at least ten links set off from the rest of the link page with a descriptive header. The links must have descriptions/annotations. Two of the links must be mathematics resources.

Assignment E8 50pts due Monday 10/16/00

Create a set of links on your link page for a specific group of students. Identify the age/grade level of the students for whom you are building this set of links. Have at least ten links set off from the rest of the link page with a descriptive header. The links must have descriptions/annotations. The links must include material (2 links minimum for each area) for students in mathematics, science, and language arts/reading. You can include additional areas.

P3

Assignment P3 50pts due Monday 10/23/00

Create a set of three pdf documents for a specific lesson. One should provide information, one should be a worksheet, and the third should be a sample quiz. These documents should look attractive and be well designed with nice formatting. The documents MUST be in pdf format. They should be available through links on a web page which identifies the subject and grade level and describes the documents and links to them. This web page should be linked through your link page. All four parts, web page and three documents should be in a folder named P3 and saved in your folder on the instructor's computer. The web page does not have to have anything fancy on it, but should have the normal headers and return links.

Assignment E9 30pts due Monday 10/30/00

Download an e-book (electronic book) from Project Gutenberg, http://gutenberg.net/. Read from it for at least one-half hour. Write a report and send it to CompEd. The report should include the title of the book and a brief description of it. The majority of the report should be on the experience of reading an e-book, and your feelings about the possible use of these books in teaching. The total report should be about one screen page.

P4

Assignment P4 50pts due Friday 11/10/00

Create a folder, P4, which will contain a web page describing a java applet game or simulation and its educational value and use. This web page should be linked through your link page.

There must be at least one link from this page to a web page to run a java applet. The java web page does not have to have anything fancy on it, just the instructions to run the applet. The necessary files for the applet should also be in the P4 folder.

you may have more than the minimum in your P4 folder if the additional material is appropriate to the game/simulation project.

You may acquire a java applet game or simulation from any site on the world wide web which gives you access to the code for the game. It is appropriate to give credit to the creators and sources of the material.

The entire P4 folder is to be installed in your folder on the instructor's computer, be properly linked and run correctly. It may be appropriate to check the operation from someone elses computer.

P5

Assignment P5 50pts due Friday 12/1/00

Create a folder, P5, which will contain a web page describing a mathematics activity and its educational value and use. This web page should be linked through your link page.

Also included in the folder and accessed from the activity page should be any materials, handouts, etc. which are used in the activity.
